George Smiley, a retiring and unassuming intelligence officer, finds himself at the center of a scandal after a routine security interview. The subject of his investigation, a Foreign Office civil servant named Samuel Fennan, is found dead of an apparent suicide just hours after Smiley cleared him. When Smiley’s superiors at “the Circus” attempt to use him as a scapegoat for the tragedy, he begins a private inquiry that uncovers a letter from the dead man sent after their meeting.
