This sweeping historical epic spans three decades of Afghan history—from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban and the post-Taliban recovery. The narrative intertwines the lives of two very different women: Mariam, an illegitimate child haunted by her past, and Laila, a bright, ambitious girl born into a loving family. Brought together by war and personal tragedy, they form an unlikely but indestructible bond as they endure the brutality of a shared husband, Rasheed, and the oppressive social shifts of their country.
