Description
The novel is split into two jarringly different halves that challenge the reader’s perception of reality. In the first part, the narrator meets a young man named Xavier who believes she is his long-lost mother—a claim she knows is impossible. In the second part, the narrative shifts into a “parallel universe” where Xavier is her son, moving back into the cramped apartment she shares with her husband, Tomas. Kitamura uses this shifting ground to explore the roles we play—actor, mother, partner—and how the truths of our lives are often just performances we’ve come to believe.
