Felix Culpa

This is a groundbreaking and “extraordinary” literary experiment. Felix Culpa is a work of found-prose fiction: almost every single sentence in the novel has been taken from another work of literature (ranging from Beckett and Kafka to Chandler and Highsmith). Jeremy Gavron has meticulously stitched these fragments together to create an entirely new, seamless story.

Information about this book

Description

The plot follows a writer who, upon hearing of the death of a young man he once taught, sets out on a journey to discover what happened. This leads him into a shadowy, noir-like world of cold northern landscapes, desolate towns, and mysterious encounters. It is a meditation on memory, the “unoriginality” of human experience, and the way stories are passed down and reshaped. The title Felix Culpa (Latin for “Happy Fault”) refers to the theological idea that a great disaster or sin can lead to an even greater good—in this case, the “theft” of sentences creating a new kind of beauty.
