Description
Set in the fictional African nation of Jidada, the story follows the dramatic collapse of the “Old Horse”—a long-serving leader who has ruled for forty years—and the chaotic struggle for power that follows. While the characters are animals (dogs, horses, cats, and crocodiles), their behaviors are hauntingly human, reflecting the corruption, propaganda, and surreal nature of modern dictatorship. At the center of this implosion is Destiny, a young goat who returns to Jidada after ten years of exile to find her home on the brink of revolution. Through a “vivid chorus of animal voices,” Bulawayo unpicks the myriad ways power is stolen, maintained, and eventually challenged.
