The story begins with every parent’s worst nightmare: thirteen-year-old Julie Whitaker is kidnapped from her bedroom in the middle of the night, while her younger sister, Jane, watches helplessly from a closet. For eight years, the family lives in a state of “frozen grief.” Then, the doorbell rings. A young woman stands there, claiming to be Julie. As Anna digs deeper into the young woman’s past, the narrative shifts between the present-day homecoming and a series of “flash-back” chapters following a girl’s harrowing journey through the underbelly of society.
