Description
Set in 1990 in a cramped council house in Wolverhampton, the story follows fourteen-year-old Johanna Morrigan. Intelligent, overweight, and desperately poor, Johanna’s world is defined by her father’s failed music dreams, her mother’s postnatal depression, and a family of seven living on benefits. After a public humiliation on local TV, Johanna decides that “Johanna” is a failure who must be destroyed. She reinvents herself as Dolly Wilde: a top-hat-wearing, chain-smoking, “Lady Sex Adventuress” and scathing music critic. As Dolly, she moves to London and enters the hedonistic world of 90s rock journalism, realizing that while you can build a new version of yourself, you eventually have to decide which parts of your original self are worth keeping.
