Description
The story follows the Koubek brothers in the wake of their father’s death. Peter is a 32-year-old high-achieving human rights lawyer in Dublin who appears unassailable but is secretly unraveling, medicating himself to manage his grief and his feelings for two very different women: his first love, Sylvia, and a younger student, Naomi. Meanwhile, Ivan is a 22-year-old competitive chess player, socially awkward and a loner, who strikes up an intense, life-altering relationship with Margaret, an older woman from a small Irish town. The “intermezzo”—a musical term for a short piece between larger movements—perfectly captures this transitional period of desire and despair as the brothers navigate a new world without their father.
