Written by three prominent postwar Japanese authors, the story follows an expedition to a remote island where the discovery of tiny, singing “fairies” leads to a collision between corporate greed and a protective ancient goddess. Each author tackles a different section of the book, blending high-stakes adventure with subtle political allegories regarding Japan’s relationship with the West. The volume, translated by Jeffrey Angles, also includes an extensive afterword exploring the cultural history and the “kaijuverse” legacy of the benevolent lepidopteran.
